The development of breast tissue in men is not uncommon. Most often it happens around puberty and, after 1-2 years, resolves by itself. In some patients, however, the problem persists causing immense anxiety to the patient. It is important to exclude any medical cause for the breast enlargement such as hormonal imbalance or certain medications. This is by means of history, examination and specific investigations. In the majority of patients there is no underlying cause.

The type of surgery for gynaecomastia depends on the size and consistency of the breasts (fatty or glandular). In most cases surgery is performed using an incision at the lower edge of the nipple and a mixture of liposuction and surgical removal is usually used to attain a good cosmetic outcome.
